Here's a picture of what began as a pencil drawing that was altered and used to make a photo emulsion four layer screen print in 2009.

I also had several copies made of the original drawing and colored them in with colored pencil, crayon, and oil pastels.

Acid Diamonds

Acid Diamonds (1/1)

This is a drawing I made using oil pastels, white stone hinge paper and colored pencils. Really I had no idea what the colored shapes were, rainbow chic hot air balloons, gay watermellons...the interpretations are endless. I decided to title it 'Acid Diamonds' from an interpretation a close friend offered me.

The piece on the right of the above picture was done on black paper which gave the background a much flatter black and the acid diamonds also appeared in more subdued tones instead of the shine given by the one done with colored pencil (left) on white paper. I do like how some of the the oil pastel colors appear more muted on the black stone hinge paper though.

Flesh on bone

Steamroller print of a Vulva from October 2009 on a crazy striped sheet (using black house paint and a steamroller). This print didn't debut in the Day of the Dead Parade unfortunately but is featured in the UM Women's Resource Center in the University Center.

I ended up carving two images from the 8ftx4ft board. The other image I carved onto the board was an idea taken from a Grateful Dead Halloween t-shirt I have.

Heart Cooks Brain

This was my first ceramic sculpture in my Ceramics 1 class.  I really love the way the glaze turned out on the flames and the water brain effect using blue slip and a dropper. I would really like to explore variations of this piece as well, maybe some prints or sculptural pieces of a different medium.

If You Need to Know You'll Know.

This gender bending image of JD Samson from Riot Grrrl Band Le Tigre (minus other members Kathleen Hanna and Johanna Fateman) is a perfect example of gender based misconceptions in American culture.

Gender is a societal creation based in ideas surrounding 'norms' and often results in exclusions. Culture will paint how you are to appear, just make sure you fit into the box just right!

Feminist Scholar Judith Butler describes the only truthful portrayal and embodiment of gender to be drag - it is a performance mockery of that which we are expected to occupy and perform in society, relationships, life. Gender is thought to be felt and acted upon inherently amongst each sex, however, when you really think about the sex specific gender roles we're all 'naturally inclined' to operate within you can uncover the many institutional and prescriptively sexist ideals that maintain many limiting and subjugating behaviors expected of us. This is my understanding of gender that I have come to except after numerous women and gender studies courses and the daunting task of attempting to digest Butler's challenging rhetoric in my Feminist Theory class of 2009.

With the non smoking ban going into effect on campus(in 2012) I made this piece to get people thinking about the smoking ban and the largest philosophical issue being "Who Owns The Air?". You could further this question to who owns the air and what does it cost?

This Giant Cigarette box is built from over 50 empty cigarette boxes. Screen printed on the small boxes are lungs and the molecular structure of benzopyrene. Benzopyrene is a carcinogenic polycyclic hydrocarbon that given off in second hand smoke, it's molecular structure simulates sugars that occur naturally in the body and as a result of this impersonation is able to bond directly to human DNA. The other imagery on the smaller sets of boxes are dollar signs spray painted in the shape of ? and !

Spilling out of the box to attack onlookers giant burning cigarettes litter the floor.

Chalkin it up

One exquisite evening in July I decided my porch was lacking, it needed that intriguing pizazz found indoors to be conveyed externally. I started chalking my porch with hopes of covering it's entirety, however, several summer showers had other plans...

While the rain prevented me from covering my whole deck it did provide a fresh canvas, allowing me to draw different abstractions as the weather and overall mood of summer fluctuated.

The tentative quality of chalk made my deck creations more fun. I was never entirely sure how long they would last, they were a hot commodity, and luckily I was able to get photos of most all of the marvelous deck-orations.

I'm currently putting together an art exhibit for The University of Montana's Day of Dialogue on October 29th. The theme behind this exhibit is to showcase feminist, pro-feminist and pro-choice art of various mediums. The purpose behind this theme is to provide a space for visibility for art promoting or made in relation to the need for women's equality and women's fundamental right to make personal decisions regarding reproduction. Through this exhibit I hope to generate awareness, recognition, and discussion of the pieces in the exhibit and the subject of feminism and women's rights.
